5 Top New Year's Resolutions

The New Year is here and everyone is talking about their New Year's Resolutions!  What resolutions do you have for 2015? Summerset Inn did some research and came up with the 5 of the top resolutions that people have. Take a look and see which one's you'll strive for this year!

1. Lose Weight


Losing weight is probably the most common New Year's resolution that you hear. After the holidays, I'm sure everyone feels like they could use at least a couple pounds. The trick to sticking with this resolution is to do it in baby steps. Don't try to go cold turkey and cut out all sweets and snacks. By completely cutting out those not so healthy items, it will be harder to still to your weight loss goals. When it comes to exercising, start by trying to carve out just a few minutes each day!

2. Eat Healthier


One thing people confuse is dieting and healthy eating habits. It is a lot easier to use the 80/20 rule than to completely cut out everything bad for you. If you can stick to eating fruits, veggies and complex carbs 80% of time, you'll do just fine. The key to eating healthier is making a lifestyle change, not starving yourself by going on an extremely strict diet.


3. Exercise More


Exercise is not only a key factor in losing weight, but also just feeling better in general. Even just exercising a little each day will help improve your mood and boost your energy.  Some simple things you can do to increase your physical activity would be to take the stairs or park farther from the door at the grocery store.

4. Spend Less and Save More


 Finances are always at the top of mind when a New Year rolls around. As you're getting ready for tax season, you're looking at the money flow from the previous year and thinking about how you can save more and spend less this year. One way to do that, is to cut down on non-essentials. How many times do you go out to eat, to the movies or on a shopping spree? Create a budget and stick to it! You can still go on that family vacation, but try staying closer to home to save. Two Favorite Family Holiday Recipes

The Christmas season is all about spending time with family and of course indulging in great food! Do you have a favorite recipe you make every year for Christmas? Summerset Inn Resort wants to share some delicious recipes with you. Here are two of our favorite family holiday recipes for you to try!

Praline French Toast Casserole


Everyone will love this breakfast casserole!  It's very rich, so it goes a long way.

Ingredients: 
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup 
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 10-12 slices soft bread, 1 in. thick
  • TOPPING: 
    • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
    • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
    • 2/3 cup maple syrup
    • 2 cups chopped pecans
Directions: 
  1. Generously butter a 13-by-9-inch casserole dish. 
  2. Mix the eggs, half-and-half, maple syrup, and sugar in a large bowl.
  3. Place the bread slices in the prepared casserole dish and cover with the egg mixture. 
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and let soak overnight in the refrigerator.   
  5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Remove the casserole from the refrigerator. 
  6. Make the topping: Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the sugar and maple syrup and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the pecans. Pour the mixture over the bread. 
  7. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes. Allow to sit for 10 minutes before serving. 

Blueberry Cheesecake


 Crust Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
Cake Ingredients: 
  • 2 - 8 oz. pkgs cream cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
Topping Ingredients: 
  • 1 pint dairy sour cream
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 can blueberry pie filling
Directions: 
  1. Spread crust ingredient mixture into a 9 x 13 pan. 
  2. Bake cracker crust 15-20 min. at 350 degrees. Let cool. 
  3. Beat cream cheese, eggs and sugar until smooth and pour into cooled crust. 
  4. Back at 350 degrees for 20 min. Let cool again. 
  5. Combine sour cream, sugar and vanilla. Spread over the baked cheesecake. 
  6. Bake in hot oven (475 degrees) for 5 min. 
  7. Spread can of blueberry pie filling on top and refrigerate.

Christmas is just around the corner!  Soon the Lake area will be shining bright with Christmas lights and other holiday decorations.  This weekend kicks off the holiday celebration with the beginning of the annual light displays popping up around the Lake of the Ozarks.  Summerset Inn Resort wants to make sure you have a list of all the great local light displays this holiday season!

24 Last Minute Halloween Costumes

One of America's favorite holidays is tomorrow!  Today everyone will be running around picking up the streamers they forgot or some extra bags of candy to put the finishing touches on their spooky holiday plans.  Did Halloween sneak up on you this year? No worries...Summerset Inn Resort has you covered with these quick and easy last minute Halloween costume ideas!

Easy Halloween Costumes to Throw Together in Minutes


Traditional Halloween Costumes

  • Witch - dress in all black, put on a pointy hat grab a broom and fly off into the night
  • Scarecrow - grab a flannel shirt, a floppy hat and paint some stiches on your face to create a simple scarecrow look
  • Skeleton - all you need is some black makeup to create a scary skeleton face
  • Ghost - you've probably heard this one before, grab an old white sheet, cut some eye holes and voila you're a ghost

Everyday People Costumes

  • Jazzerciser - grab your stretchy pants, some neon colored clothes and a headband to dance your way to fun
  • Young Child - grab your footy pajamas and carry around a teddy bear
  • Nerd - Add some tape to the middle of your glasses and grab some high-waisted pants, make it even better with a bowtie and some suspenders
  • Robber - black clothes, a dark beanie and some gloves make the perfect burglar costume
  • Cowboy - all you need is a plaid shirt, a bandanna and a cowboy hat for this costume

  • Iron Chef - if you have a chefs hat and an iron, you can transform yourself into an Iron Chef 
  • Medusa - Put some toy snakes on your head and add some dramatic eye makeup 

Clever Costumes 

  • Static Cling - gather up those unmatched socks you have and attach them to your solid colored outfit, its as simple as that
  • Nickelback - stick nickels on the back of your shirt to become "Nickelback" 
  • Ceiling Fan - grab an old T-shirt and write "Go Ceiling" on it, some pom-poms or a foam finger will complete the look 
  • Party Animal - dress in your favorite animal print, use some face paint to add more detail
  • Candy Rapper - tape some candy to your hoodie, put your baseball cap on backwards and grab some shades to become a "Candy Rapper" 
  • Fork in the Road - take white duct tape to a black shirt and tape a plastic fork to the center
  • "Smartie" Pants - take the nerd costume with taped glasses and suspenders, tape some smartie candies to your pants and tada you're a "Smartie" pants
  • "When Life Gives You Lemons..." - take an old shirt and write LIFE on it in permanent marker, then grab a bag of lemons and go make some lemonade

Summerset Recognized as a 25+ Year Member of the Lake Area Chamber

Each Fall the Lake Area Chamber Members come together for an annual meeting and dinner celebration. This event is just one of the many great social and networking events you can attend as a member.  Many awards are given to members throughout the night for various accomplishments. Summerset Inn Resort was one of the members receiving an award last week at this year's dinner!

Dave and Kathy Brooks have been a members of the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce for 32 years now! Their children, Brian and Angie Schuster who help run the business, are following in their footsteps and are also very involved in the Chamber.  In fact, Angie Schuster was just elected to the Chamber Board this year!

    • Two private bedrooms, daybed adjacent to the living room, hide-a-bed, kitchenette and a bath w/shower.  Max - 8 people
  • Villa Cottage, 2 Bedroom / 2 Bath - $153 per night in October
    • Cottage style room with 2 private bedrooms with King beds, hide-a-bed, kitchenette, fireplace, and 2 bathrooms (master has whirlpool tub).  Max - 6 people 
  • Captain's Quarters - $227 per night in October
    • 5 bedroom, 3 bath with bathtub/shower and a large deck.  Kitchen has a garbage disposal, dishwasher and microwave. 2 King beds, 2 Queen beds, 2 Double beds.  Max - 10 people

Not just a condominium project, but spacious condominiums carefully placed within Summerset Inn Resort.  All 2- to 4-bedroom Villas are fully equipped with:  electric range, oven, microwave, large refrigerator with ice maker, garbage disposal, and dishwasher.  Basic cooking utensils, dishes, and glassware furnished.  All master baths have separate showers and whirlpool tubs. Every Villa has private, spacious decks to enjoy those great Summerset sunsets!
