Celebrating National Picnic Month at the Lake of the Ozarks

July is National Picnic Month! Now that the warm weather is here, it's a great time to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. A picnic with family and friends is a great way to enjoy the sunshine. National Picnic Month encourages you to celebrate the warm summer days while enjoying some delicious food outdoors. Keep reading to learn more about how July became National Picnic Month and how you can celebrate it with Summerset Inn here at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The History of National Picnic Month

Throughout recorded civilization, there's been something special about eating a meal outdoors. Once summer comes around, we're able to get out of the stuffy house we've been confined to all winter and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. The word "picnic" is thought to have first been used by Tony Willis in 1692. Since then, everyone from the working class to the upper class has been fascinated with moving there meal outdoors for a change. Throughout history, picnics have been used for a variety of purposes, from social and family gatherings to a peaceful protest in the Pan-European Picnic. The most notable, and largest, picnic ever held spanned 600 miles, crossing France from coast to coast and celebrated the millennium’s first Bastille Day in 2000. National Picnic Month celebrates how enjoying a meal outdoors can bring people together, families, friends, countries and all humanity.

Celebrating National Picnic Month

Celebrating National Picnic Month is as simple as it sounds - just grab some food and head outside for a meal! Bring your favorite foods that can be eaten cold or get some food that can be prepared in the BBQ grill area at our Lake of the Ozarks waterfront resort. Enjoy your picnic meal right here on site and take in the beautiful view of the water or pack up and take it elsewhere. There are plenty of great places at the Lake of the Ozarks to host a picnic. From the Lake of the Ozarks State Park to Ha Ha Tonka State Park, the Lake area boasts some great outdoor areas for gathering and enjoying a picnic meal with family and friends.

National Picnic Month Food Ideas

If you're having your picnic at our Lake of the Ozarks resort, you'll have access to the BBQ grill area, where you can prepare burgers and hot dogs and more. If you're thinking of taking your picnic elsewhere, you may want to pack items that are best eaten cold. You could make a large submarine sandwich to slice and share. Potato salad, cole slaw and potato chips are great side dish items for a picnic. Watermelon and other fruit options are also great choices. Lemonade is a refreshing drink to have on hand at a picnic. If you want some dessert, cookies and brownies are your best bet. The options for what foods to have on your picnic are pretty endless, and should be based on what you and your group enjoy most. You could even have a potluck picnic where everyone brings a dish to share.

We hope you take some time this summer season to have a picnic and enjoy the great outdoors. If you want to enjoy that time here at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks, Summerset Inn Resort has your Lake of the Ozarks accommodations covered! From one bedroom units up to 5 bedroom condo-like units, we've got the perfect place for any size group to stay. Give us a call at 573-348-5073.

4 Benefits of Staying at a Small Resort

When going on vacation, it's important you choose the right place to stay. Think about what fits your needs, your personality and your desires. Today's blog from your favorite resort at the Lake of the Ozarks offers a few of the benefits of choosing to stay at a small resort.

1. Bigger Isn't Always Better.

When you stay at a large resort, you have to deal with large crowds. There are too many people in the pool, you can't find a lounge chair on the deck, all the BBQ grills are taken already, and the list goes on. When it comes to staying at a resort, bigger isn't always better. If you're looking for a relaxing place to stay, then a small resort is the way to go! And if you're staying at the Lake of the Ozarks, Summerset Inn Resort is the best small resort around!

2. The Price is Right.

Unlike big resorts run by big corporations, family resorts are typically more affordable. Large staff numbers, franchise fees, marketing fees, etc. aren't running up the prices. The great thing about Summerset Inn is that not only are our prices affordable, but we offer amenities that you won't find in all the area resorts. Many of our Lake of the Ozarks resort units feature kitchenettes for your convenience. You won't find a better place to stay at the Lake of the Ozarks for your family vacation than Summerset Inn.

3. Walk to the Pool.

No matter what room you're staying in at Summerset, you're close to the pool. While huge resorts have rooms so far away from the pool that you need to drive over every time you want to use it, small resorts are different. You can easily walk to the pool from anywhere on the Summerset property. People often ask how close the pool is when booking their reservations - and especially if you have little ones, it's a big convenience to be close. Take a dip in the water, let the kids splash and/or soak up some sun!

4. Great Customer Service.

Small businesses often times understand the value of quality customer service better than those large resorts. When you arrive at Summerset Inn, you'll discover one of the most family-friendly resorts at the Lake of the Ozarks! At Summerset, we're focused on giving you great customer service, so you continue coming back to see us year after year. When you stay with us, you're almost like family! You're sure to have a great time when you choose to stay at our small resort.

7 Road Trip Tips for Your Summer Vacation to the Lake

The Lake of the Ozarks' central location makes it an easy road trip destination for many. Whether you're coming from St. Louis or Kansas City, Illinois or Kansas, a road trip to the Lake this summer could be just what your family needs. Today's blog from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks resort offers some road trip tips for you to keep in mind:

1. Have Your Vehicle Serviced.

Before you hit the road, have your mechanic take a look at your vehicle to make sure everything is in tip-top shape. The last thing you want to happen is be stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck when you could be reaching your vacation destination. Check the fluid levels, brakes, tires and anything else that could cause you problems on the road. You also want to make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and that you have a jack and jumper cables on hand.

2. Make Sure Your Documents Are Handy.

In the event you get pulled over on your road trip, you'll want to have your documents handy. Make sure your auto insurance is up-to-date and your latest cards are in your glove box or center console, where you can easily get to them if needed. You also want to make sure you have your license in your wallet and that your vehicle registration is also up-to-date. Driving around with expired license plates is not a good idea. In addition, you may want to clear up any old traffic tickets before you head out.

3. Pack an Emergency Kit.

You never know when you'll end up in an emergency situation. Be prepared for whatever your road trip may throw at you, from a flat tire to horrible weather conditions. Traveling with the right necessities is key. Include in your kit: maps, flashlights, an emergency blanket, rain ponchos, hand warmers, bandages, gauze, ointment for cuts, aspirin, a thermometer and 3 days worth of water and food. While some of these items may not apply to a short, summer road trip, it's always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

4. Bring Some Entertainment Options (Especially If You Have Kids).

Pre-load your electronics with plenty of entertainment options. For you, maybe that's a new playlist of your favorite songs or some podcasts you've been wanting to listen to, but never find the time. For the kids, that could be downloaded Netflix movies or shows and some new games from the App store. Make sure you have something to keep everyone entertained so they don't get bored and grouchy.

5. Pack Your Vehicle Lightly.

When you're not flying, it's easier to over pack. Make sure you don't overload your vehicle, as you may come across some things on your road trip that you want to bring back with you. You also don't want to be crammed into a car with no extra room to move around. You want to make your space as comfortable as possible for the long drive ahead.

6. Carry Some Cash for Tolls.

The Kansas Expressway and other toll roads can easily pop up out of nowhere. It's always a good idea to carry some cash on you for unexpected expenses such as these. You also never know when technology will present issues and you wished you had some cash on you. Run through the ATM before hitting the road and heading to the Lake, you'll thank us later!

7. Map Your Route Ahead of Time.

Unless you have no timeline on when you have to arrive somewhere, it's best to do a little pre-planning before you hit the road. You want to have a general idea of how to get where you're going. While having a GPS is great, you don't want to rely solely on technology. Be sure to bring maps with you as well in case of technical difficulties. It's okay to get off route and check out that place you saw a billboard for, but you'll be less stressed if you have the slightest idea of where you're going.

After the drive, you're going to need a place to crash for the weekend, or the week, and Summerset Inn Resort has you covered. From efficiency units to larger condo-like units, we've got some of the best accommodations at the Lake of the Ozarks. Book your reservations today by calling 573-348-5073.
