At the Lake of the Ozarks, the fall season is the most beautiful time of the year. From mid-September through early November, the miles of shoreline and rolling hillsides transform from green to vibrant shades of yellow, red and orange. This is a great time of the year to explore nature in the amazing state parks this area has to offer. Hiking and biking are great activities to participate in during the fall season at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Less Crowds

Summers at the Lake of the Ozarks can often get a little crowded. If the busy lakefront bars and crowded waters of the Lake aren't your scene, consider a fall getaway. Now that the season has come to a close, things are winding down. You can experience the beauty of the Lake of the Ozarks without all the hustle and bustle of the summer. While you may need to bring a light jacket, you can still hit the water too if you'd like. Not only are the waters less crowded but the shops and restaurants aren't quite a busy either.

4 Health Benefits of Taking a Vacation

Did you know that the average American worker only takes half of his or her vacation time? Not only is taking a vacation fun, but it has health benefits too! Studies have shown that taking time away from work can have both physical and psychological health benefits. In today's blog, Summerset Inn Resort discusses 4 health benefits of taking a vacation.

1. Decreased Depression.

Who doesn't feel better while on vacation? Vacations have been known to lift spirits for years. A study conducted by Marshfield Clinic determined that women who take vacations at least twice a year were less likely to suffer from depression. A survey from the University of Pittsburgh's Mind Body Center found that leisure activities, including vacationing, contributed to higher positive emotion levels and less depression.

2. Reduced Stress Levels.

A study by the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations work to reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that tend to be sources of stress. While it may seem obvious that vacationing reduces your stress levels, the longer term effects are not as obvious. Studies found that the lower stress levels found in workers on vacation actually last up to five weeks after returning to work. These vacationers were less likely to have stress-related complaints such as headaches, backaches and heart palpitations.

3. Decreased Risk of Heart Disease.

Going on vacation can actually help you live a longer life. Studies have shown that taking regular time off from work, at least once a year, can decrease the risk of heart disease and heart attack. According to the Framingham Heart Study, revealed that men who didn't take a vacation for several years were 30% more likely to have heart attacks than those who took time off. The study also showed that women who took a vacation only once every 6 years or less were almost 8 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack compared to women who vacationed at least twice a year.

4. Improved Sleep Cycles.

A study from Air New Zealand and former NASA scientists tested vacationers on their sleep patterns. The results showed that while on vacation, the average person got an extra hour of sleep. After returning home, that person continued enjoying 20 minutes more sleep per night. Getting enough sleep in important to both physical and mental health, so taking regular vacations is important for your overall health and well-being.
