5 Creative Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day

You've only got a few days left before Valentine's Day is here! Expectations can be high for this holiday. In addition to the cards, flowers and chocolates you may already have planned, it's important to spend time with that special someone in your life. If you're still trying to figure out how to celebrate your love this Valentine's Day, try one of these great ideas from your favorite Lake of the Ozarks resort!

1. Re-Create Your First Date.

The first date with your significant other is something you will never forget. Valentine's Day is an opportunity to show your love for each other and what better way to do that than going back to the day that it all started. Whether you guys went for a stroll through the park or to nice (possibly awkward) dinner, take a trip into the past and re-create that first date you had with your special someone.

2. Have a Movie Marathon.

Cuddling up to your favorite movies is a great way to spend Valentine's Day. Create a cozy nook with some pillows and blankets. Add your favorite sweets and snacks, and you have yourself the makings of a romantic night in. Why would you want to go to a crowded movie theater when you have everything you need for an awesome movie night right at home?

3.  Get Pampered at the Spa.

Treat yourself and that special someone to a relaxing day at the spa. From a couples massage to facials or just soaking in the hot tub, the spa is a great place to spend a stress-free day with that special someone. Take a break from your daily lives and enjoy each other's company with no distractions. If you're celebrating on a budget this year, bring the spa to your own home. Take a relaxing bubble bath and then give each other a nice foot massage.

4. Enjoy a Candle Light Dinner.

Whether you want to make reservations at that fancy restaurant you've been dying to go to or prepare a something at home, a nice dinner is always a great option for Valentine's Day. Kick up the romance with some candle light and champagne or wine. Be sure to include something sweet to indulge in after the main course. Chocolate is always a good option!

5. Go On a Scavenger Hunt.

Out with the old and in with the new. Forget about the traditional dinner and do something fun with that special someone. Scavenger hunts are a great way to bond with your partner. Working together to find the items on your list will bring you closer together. Think outside the box this Valentine's Day and try something new!

9 Holiday Food Safety Tips

From pumpkin pie to green bean casserole, food safety is probably one of the last things on your mind. While the U.S. food supply is one of the safest in the world, some 76 million people get sick from food-borne illness every year. Summerset Inn is here to help! WebMD.com offers a few safety tips for dealing with all those delicious Thanksgiving dishes and we want to share them with you.

 1. Plan Ahead for Storing Food.

With all that extra food you wouldn't normally have in your house, storing it at proper temperatures could be a challenge. Think about all the dishes you're planning to have this Thanksgiving and make sure you have adequate space to keep hot dishes hot  and the cold ones cold. You may need to use coolers and if so, check them regularly to make sure the ice hasn't melted.

2. Properly Defrost Your Turkey.

Be sure to allocate at least 24 hours per 5 pounds to defrost your turkey in the refrigerator. Do not let your turkey defrost on the kitchen counter. If you don't have enough time to defrost it in the fridge properly, using a cold water bath is another safe option. In this case, you will need to change the cold water bath every 30 minutes which can be time consuming.

3. Wash Your Hands Often.

Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands before you start preparing the food. Throughout the food preparation, continue to wash your hands regularly, especially when moving from preparing one dish to another. Simply washing your hands is one of the easiest ways to minimize food contamination. Be sure to wash your hands again when you are completely done preparing all the food.

4. Wash All Fresh Produce.

Make sure you wash all produce, even the prepackaged greens. You want to minimize potential bacteria contamination, and you don't know who or what has touched that produce while it was sitting in the store. You'll also want to make sure that your kitchen counters, sponges, cutting boards and knives are well scrubbed.

5. Cook Everything to Proper Temperature.

Use a thermometer to make sure that your food has been cooked enough to kill any bacteria. Hot dishes, such as Turkey and stuffing, should be heated to at least 165 degrees and kept above 140 degrees while being served to make sure any potential bacteria is destroyed. For the cold dishes, you'll want to make sure they stay at least 40 degrees or lower.

6. Be Extra Careful with Eggs.

Many eggnog recipes call for uncooked eggs, but to be perfectly safe, you need to use pasteurized eggs or cook the egg yolks lightly. You want to be sure to kill any potential salmonella bacteria. Also, keep your eggs refrigerated until they're ready for use and always cook egg products to at least 160 degrees.

7. Keep Guests Out of the Kitchen.

The holidays always coincide with cold and flu season, which further compounds the fact that about half of your guests will be carrying bacteria on their fingertips. It's important to prevent anyone from picking at the food while it is being prepared. Since people tend to get hungry waiting for dinner, consider having some small appetizers for your guests to nibble on while the food is being prepared.

8. Refrigerate Leftovers Within Two Hours.

While leaving the food out to snack on all afternoon may sound like less work, leaving food out too long is one of the biggest holiday food safety issues. When food sits out too long (and doesn't stay within the proper temperatures listed above), there is a potential for bacteria growth. Experts suggest to cut the meat off the turkey to allow it to cool properly, and store more easily.

9. Reheat Leftovers to 165 Degrees.

Filling a plate of food and popping it into the microwave might seem like the most logical way to heat up your leftovers. However, it is important to use a thermometer to make sure those leftovers are heated enough to kill any possible bacteria. Microwaves heat in an uneven manner, so be sure to let it sit for a minute or two to let the heat destroy anything and then check the temperature all around the plate.

The Reasons Behind 3 Popular Halloween Traditions

The word "Halloween" dates back to about 1745, as do some of the traditions we still celebrate today. From pumpkin carving and apple bobbing to dressing up for trick-or-treating, Halloween is filled with fun traditions for the whole family. To get in the Halloween spirit, your favorite resort at the Lake of the Ozarks has done some research on 3 popular traditions of this holiday.

Why Do We Dress Up in Costumes?

During the Celtic festival of Samhain, the Celts would sometimes dress in costumes of white clothing and masks or blackface to ward off evil spirits. During this time, people thought the souls of the deceased were out and about. People left food and drinks out to appease these spirits or creatures, so people started dressing up to impersonate them and collect the treats themselves. If the Celts encountered these evil spirits, their disguises would have them mistaken for other spirits and they would be left alone. Scottish and Irish immigrants brought the Halloween tradition of dressing up to the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries. While different regions celebrated Halloween in their own way, the idea that spirits were out during the holiday was universal. Therefore, people everywhere would dress up and behave differently than they normally would in their everyday life.

Why Do We Go Trick-or-Treating?

Traveling door-to-door collecting candy has been a popular Halloween tradition in the United States for more than 100 years. The actual origins of trick-or-treating however, are a little hazy. The ritual is believed to come from several different places including ancient Celtic festivals, early Roman Catholic holidays, medieval practices and even British politics. During some Celtic celebrations, people dressed up and performed antics in exchange for food and drink. This custom known as "mumming" dates back to the middle ages and is thought to be an antecedent of trick-or-treating. During the 19th century, poor people would visit the homes of the wealthy and receive pastries called "soul cakes" in exchange for a promise to pray for the souls of the homeowners' dead relatives. This ritual was known as "souling" and was later taken up by children who would ask for gifts such as food, money and ale. In Scotland and Ireland, instead of offering to pray for the souls of the dead, the children would sing a song, recite a poem, tell a joke or perform another sort of “trick” before collecting their treat. Another potential trick-or-treating predecessor is the British custom for children to wear masks and carry effigies while begging for pennies on Guy Fawkes Night, which commemorates the foiling of the so-called Gunpowder Plot in 1605. In the early 20th century, Irish and Scottish communities revived the traditions of souling and guising in the United States.During World War I, children had to refrain from this tradition due to the sugar rationing, but after quickly became standard practice for millions of children in America.

Why Do We Carve Pumpkins?

The tradition of pumpkin carving began about the same time as trick-or-treating, but didn't actually involve a pumpkin at all. Instead, they carved turnips. Children would carry turnip lanterns while traveling door-to-door to collect soul cakes to commemorate the dead. The name "jack-o-lantern" dates back to the 17th century when it literally meant "man with a lantern." By the late 1800s, people started applying the name to those "turnip lanterns," made by scooping out the inside of the turnip, carving the shell into a rude representation of the human face and placing a lighted candle in it. It wasn't until the Irish immigrants brought these traditions to North America that the more commonly available pumpkin became used for the purpose of carving jack-o-lanterns. It wasn't until the mid-to-late 19th century that pumpkin carving was an established Halloween tradition.
