The long weekend that closes out the summer season at the Lake of the Ozarks is upon us. Labor Day Weekend will be filled with families enjoying the end of boating season and celebrations with food, fireworks and more. Labor Day Fireworks Fun Fest at Old Kinderhook 
Date: Friday, September 1
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 pm

Details: There will be live music, games, face painting, fireworks and more for the entire family to enjoy. Bring blankets and watch the fireworks at dusk from the golf course. An All-American meal will also be available for a small fee.

Sunset & Fireworks Cruise 
Date: Saturday, September 2
Time: Boarding 7:30 pm, Departure 8:00 pm
Place: Celebration II at the Bagnell Dam
Details: Enjoy a beautiful sunset cruise on the Celebration II, with a huge fireworks display at the Bagnell Dam. Tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for children 3-9 and children under 3 are free. Call 573-480-3212 for reservations.

Celebrating Labor Day: The Why and How

While Labor Day is meant to celebrate the U.S. workforce, it also marks the unofficial end of the summer season of vacations at the Lake of the Ozarks. This weekend is one last chance to come down to the Lake and enjoy time outdoors with friends and family while the weather is still nice. Here are a few ways Americans traditionally celebrate this holiday weekend:

Why We Celebrate


Labor Day was originally intended to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers. In many ways, it remains an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. However, the 3-day weekend didn't start until 1884 when the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday.

How We Celebrate


The focus of the holiday has shifted to celebrating a day off with family. Here are a few ways that people all across the country spend their extended weekend off:

1. Food - Picnics and BBQs are a tradition for Labor Day Weekend. Fried chicken, hamburgers, corndogs, potato salad, coleslaw, watermelon and lemonade are great choices for this 3-day weekend celebration. So throw some meat on the grill and spend the time with your family and friends.  

2. Parades - After the first Labor Day parade took place in New York city, many other states followed suite. People dress up in red, white and blue to show their support for our great country, which wouldn't be the same without those who have put in the hard work. Today you will find Labor Day parades and other activities all across the country!
