Why We Celebrate
Labor Day was originally intended to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers. In many ways, it remains an annual national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. However, the 3-day weekend didn't start until 1884 when the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday.
How We Celebrate
The focus of the holiday has shifted to celebrating a day off with family. Here are a few ways that people all across the country spend their extended weekend off:
1. Food - Picnics and BBQs are a tradition for Labor Day Weekend. Fried chicken, hamburgers, corndogs, potato salad, coleslaw, watermelon and lemonade are great choices for this 3-day weekend celebration. So throw some meat on the grill and spend the time with your family and friends.
2. Parades - After the first Labor Day parade took place in New York city, many other states followed suite. People dress up in red, white and blue to show their support for our great country, which wouldn't be the same without those who have put in the hard work. Today you will find Labor Day parades and other activities all across the country!
3. Fireworks - One favorite tradition for the Labor Day holiday is fireworks! If you're spending the weekend at our waterfront resort at Lake of the Ozarks, be sure to check out some of our local fireworks displays: http://funlake.com/labor-day-weekend-fireworks-displays.
4. No Work - Take some time away from work to catch up with your family. Turn off that cell phone and don't be checking emails all weekend; they can wait until Tuesday. Your clients are going to be spending time with their families as well and won't see your reply until Tuesday anyway.
However you decide to celebrate, be sure to have fun and take some time to get your work and family life back in balance. These 3-day weekends don't come along that often, so make sure to appreciate the time. Summerset Inn Resort wishes you a Happy Labor Day Weekend! Be sure to come see us for a weekend getaway at the Lake of the Ozarks before we close for the season!
