11 Fun Facts About 4th of July

4th of July week is here and we're excited to kick off the long holiday weekend with our friends at Summerset Inn! Fun Fact #1 - The 4th of July became a federal holiday in 1870.

Fun Fact #2 - Betsy Ross was believed to have sewn the first American flag.

Fun Fact #3 - The majority of the signatures on the Declaration of Independence were signed on August 2, 1776, not July 4th.

Fun Fact #4 - Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner.

Fun Fact #5 - On the flag, the 50 stars represent our 50 states and the 13 stripes represent the first 13 colonies when our country was founded.

Fun Fact #6 - The first person to sign the Declaration of Independence was John Hancock. A signature is commonly known as a person's "John Hancock" and that's where the saying comes from.

Fun Fact #7 - New York City is home to the country's largest 4th of July celebration but we're pretty partial to our local celebrations at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Fun Fact #8 - Our state capital was located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before it was moved to Washington, DC. Philadelphia is also home to the Liberty Bell, among other historical artifacts from our nation's founding.

Fun Fact #9 - Roughly 15,000 4th of July celebrations take place throughout the United States.

Fun Fact #10 - Hot dogs are a popular 4th of July bbq treat and about 150 million of them are consumed on Independence Day.

Fun Fact #11 - Presidents Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe all passed away on the 4th of July. On a lighter note, Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4th.
