The History of National Picnic Month
Throughout recorded civilization, there's been something special about eating a meal outdoors. Once summer comes around, we're able to get out of the stuffy house we've been confined to all winter and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. The word "picnic" is thought to have first been used by Tony Willis in 1692. Since then, everyone from the working class to the upper class has been fascinated with moving there meal outdoors for a change. Throughout history, picnics have been used for a variety of purposes, from social and family gatherings to a peaceful protest in the Pan-European Picnic. The most notable, and largest, picnic ever held spanned 600 miles, crossing France from coast to coast and celebrated the millennium’s first Bastille Day in 2000. National Picnic Month celebrates how enjoying a meal outdoors can bring people together, families, friends, countries and all humanity.
Celebrating National Picnic Month
Celebrating National Picnic Month is as simple as it sounds - just grab some food and head outside for a meal! Bring your favorite foods that can be eaten cold or get some food that can be prepared in the BBQ grill area at our Lake of the Ozarks waterfront resort. Enjoy your picnic meal right here on site and take in the beautiful view of the water or pack up and take it elsewhere. There are plenty of great places at the Lake of the Ozarks to host a picnic. From the Lake of the Ozarks State Park to Ha Ha Tonka State Park, the Lake area boasts some great outdoor areas for gathering and enjoying a picnic meal with family and friends.
National Picnic Month Food Ideas
If you're having your picnic at our Lake of the Ozarks resort, you'll have access to the BBQ grill area, where you can prepare burgers and hot dogs and more. If you're thinking of taking your picnic elsewhere, you may want to pack items that are best eaten cold. You could make a large submarine sandwich to slice and share. Potato salad, cole slaw and potato chips are great side dish items for a picnic. Watermelon and other fruit options are also great choices. Lemonade is a refreshing drink to have on hand at a picnic. If you want some dessert, cookies and brownies are your best bet. The options for what foods to have on your picnic are pretty endless, and should be based on what you and your group enjoy most. You could even have a potluck picnic where everyone brings a dish to share.
