1. Don't Make Too Many Resolutions.
One of the biggest mistakes people make with new years resolutions is setting too many of them. Making a 180 in every aspect of your life isn't that realistic (see #2). Spread yourself too thin, and you're sure to let some of those resolutions slip, which could lead to giving up on all of them altogether. Think about what's really important to you and how you can realistically make strides in that area of your life.2. Only Choose Realistic Goals.
The easiest way to set yourself up for failure, is to set your sights too high. While you want to push yourself some, you don't want to make it so hard that you give up early on. Don't just think about the end goal; think about what steps you'll need to take to get there. Are those steps achievable?
3. Take Baby Steps.
Going cold turkey rarely works. Take small steps to get where you want to be. Do you want to lose weight? Remove soda or cookies from your diet, don't cut out everything sweet altogether or you're going to craze it more and then over indulge later. Do you want to save more money? Set a budget and start tracking your spending; don't avoid shopping altogether or you're likely to go on a spending spree in the future.
4. Write Down a Plan.
Some things are easier said than done. That's typically the case with new years resolutions. Make sure you come up with a solid plan of how you're going to stick to your resolutions, and write it down. Refer back to it any time you think you might be getting off track. Set a timeline for when you'd like to achieve what. Keeping track of your progress is a great way to ensuring you stick with it.
5. Enlist Accountability Buddies.
Whether its family or friends, let others know what your new years resolutions are so they can encourage you and hold you accountable. Their motivation could be what keeps you from giving up on your resolutions before you even get started. Make your goals known to those that are always there to support you in everything you do. If you have friends with the same resolutions in mind, you can help keep each other on track.
6. Forgive & Congratulate Yourself.
If you get off track, forgive yourself. Dwelling on what you did wrong isn't going to change the fact that it happened. You need to get over it and move forward, continuing what you set out to do. In addition, congratulate yourself anytime you take steps to achieve your goals. Reward yourself when a mini goal, which leads up to the final goal, is completed.
